Principal Investigator
Short bio & current area(s) of interest
F. Lopes has a MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon. Lopes received her PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Lisbon, with a project combining physical organic chemistry and prodrug reactivity. She is Associate Professor in Medicinal Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon. She was a visiting researcher at University of Cape Town in 2016. Lopes is involved in the design of antimalarial agents targeting several stages of the malaria parasite’s life-cycle. She pioneered the use of the hybrid drug concept in antimalarial drug discovery. Lopes is developing pro-drugs as targeted delivery systems based on parasite-selective mechanisms such as the Fe(II)-triggered activation of endoperoxides. Currently, she is translating this concept to target Leishmania parasites and to develop tumor activated pro-drugs. Additionally, she is developing new lead compounds for tuberculosis treatment using a multitargeting approach.
