Results of the 2018 CaixaResearch Health Research project lead by Rui Castro
Fatty liver disease affects more than one third of the adult population. It is caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver and is exacerbated by factors such as obesity and diabetes. As a silent disease, most patients do not experience any symptoms and disease diagnosis is often accidental. Furthermore, effective therapies are lacking.
The project selected in the la Caixa Research Call for Health Research 2018, led by Rui Castro, Associate Professor at Faculty of Pharmacy, Universidade de Lisboa, and group leader of the Liver Disease Diagnostics and Therapeutics Laboratory at iMed.ULisboa, focused on identifying non-invasive biomarkers that could facilitate the early diagnosis and monitoring of disease progression; as well as novel therapeutics.
