Short bio & current area(s) of interest
Vasco Branco has a degree in Biology from Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (2003) and got his PhD in Pharmacy (specialization in Toxicology) at the Faculty of Pharmacy University of Lisbon (2012). He received a Post-Doc Fellowship from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (2013-2019) to study the interaction between mercury compounds and the thioredoxin system, namely to understand if this event was related to the unfolding of cell death, at the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa), and at Arne Holmgren’s group, at the Division of Biochemistry, Department of Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. Presently, he is a researcher at iMed.ULisboa where I continue this line of research concerning the role of redox active systems (glutathione and thioredoxin) in mercury toxicity to develop mitigation strategies, but has broaden his interests to study the use of redox systems as potential targets in glioblastoma therapy and to evaluate the toxicity of other environmental pollutants such as PAHs and nanoplastics. Since 2010, he has been enrolled in teaching in Biochemistry, Toxicology and Risk Assessment and has supervised students of all graduation levels.
