Short bio & current area(s) of interest
Nuno Taveira is a Full professor of microbiology and molecular biology at the Instituto Universitário Egas Moniz which is a private university located in Monte de Caparica, Almada, Portugal. He is also a Research associate and group leader at iMed.UL, Faculty of Pharmacy of Lisbon’s University leading a group of more or less 8 researchers (including 3 post-docs and 4 PhD students). Research interests of Nuno Taveira are mainly centered on HIV-1, HIV-2 and AIDS with more sparse work on yellow fever virus, HCV, HBV, Adenovirus and, more recently, SARS-CoV2. More specifically he helps to design, produce and/or evaluate antivirals drugs or candidates, HIV vaccines and microbicides, and new molecular diagnostic assays that can be used in developed and developing countries. Nuno Taveira also has a long-standing interest in investigating the evolution, drug resistance, epidemiology, and transmission and dispersion dynamics of virus infections (mostly HIV and HCV). Many studies are done in Africa (Angola, Cape Verde and Mozambique) and the produced data is used to estimate disease burden by the Global Burden of Disease Injuries and Risk Factor Study (GBD) and Local Burden of Disease (LBD), Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, USA. The data is also used by the local governments to develop better public health interventions, and by the local clinicians to better manage and treat their patients.
