Madalena Pimentel obtained her PhD in Microbiology, in 2000 from the University of Lisbon. Currently she is an Associate Professor with habilitation in Microbiology at the Department of Pharmacy, Pharmacology and Health Technologies, Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon. M Pimentel coordinates Microbiology and Molecular Genetics of Bacteria Curricular Units in undergraduate and graduate courses of the Faculties of Pharmacy and Medicine of the University of Lisbon. The research activity has been developed at the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa), where she has been coordinating research projects focused on the bacteriophage-mycobacteria interactions, particularly on the mechanisms of phage-induced lysis. She has been responsible for the supervision of several PhD, MSc and undergraduate students and has published in international peer-review journals. Her interest in bacteriophages has also led to the participation in research projects aiming the development of phage-based products for therapeutic applications, in collaboration with biopharmaceutical companies.
