Short bio & current area(s) of interest
José Miguel Azevedo-Pereira is Assistant Professor with Habilitation of Virology in the Department of Farmácia, Farmacologia e Tecnologias em Saúde at Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (FFUL). He received is PharmD in 1987, his PhD in 2001 and the Habilitation in 2015 from University of Lisbon. During graduate and postdoctoral studies he focused on HIV tropism, namely the mechanisms of interaction with cellular receptors using HIV-2 as a model. He have been committed to understand why HIV-2 is less pathogenic than HIV-1. Based on previous work he suggests that one of the factors that contribute to HIV-2 lower virulence is the efficiency with which HIV-2 interacts with cellular receptors. Since 2001 he has received (as PI) a total of eight R&D fundings from public and private institutions (e.g. pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies) all focused in HIV: (i) interaction with target cells; (ii) validation of diagnostic tests; and (iii) mechanisms of neurocognitive disorders associated with HIV. He has received several scientific awards from both public and private institutions. Ongoing project: Neurodegenerative processes associated with HIV infection (until 2022). Since March 2020 he is involved in the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and in the evaluation of antiviral/neutralization activities against SARS-CoV-2 of natural/synthetic compounds, human sera and monoclonal antibodies. More than 150 publications. Since 2005 is Head of Virology and Clinical Virology courses in FFUL. Supervisor of more than 20 PhD and Master students.
