José M. Marcelino is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute Egas Moniz and Researcher at iMed.ULisboa. He obtained a Biology Degree at University of Azores, Ponta Delgada, in 1998 and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences at University of Lisbon, Lisbon, in 2011.
The research goals by Marcelino JM includes isolation of HIV-1 and HIV-2 isolates, expression, purification and characterization of HIV envelope peptides, epitopes mapping, neutralizing antibodies response evaluation in infection by HIV-1 and HIV-2 and HIV vaccines development.
Marcelino, JM is author/co-author of 14 peer-reviewed publications and many presentations in international meetings. In 2012, he was awarded the Pfizer in Clinical Research for a project focused in HIV-2 infection, who showed that resistance to neutralizing antibodies occurs in advanced stages of the disease and is associated with virus tropism for the CXCR4 coreceptor.
He was the Portuguese Principal Investigator in a European project (HIVERA- VIHDUAVAX) focused on two gp41 peptides for a new prophylactic vaccine both neutralizing HIV-1 and inhibiting cd4 depletion.
