Isabel Ribeiro

Principal Investigator
Short bio & current area(s) of interest
Isabel Ribeiro completed her degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at FFUL, in 2000. After gaining experience in the Quality Control of Medicines Laboratory at Infarmed (National Authority of Medicines and Health Products), she began her research and academic career at FFUL in 2003. In 2007 she completed the MSc in Quality Control & Food Toxicology and in 2012, she concluded her PhD in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology with her thesis titled “Sophorolipids: From Biosynthesis to Biological Activity Evaluation.”. Currently, she is an Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicines at FFUL. Her research interests primarily revolve around the development of innovative antimicrobial strategies, particularly for the prevention of infections associated with medical devices. Her work explores the use of antimicrobial glycolipids as novel agents, involving both the biosynthesis and LC-MS characterization of these compounds. Ribeiro’s research includes investigating different methods of incorporating these glycolipids into biomaterials, including surface functionalization through release-based (e.g., adsorption, nanoparticle systems) and contact-kill strategies (e.g., covalent bonding to surfaces). More recently, she has expanded her work to explore the potential of 3D-printing technology in creating novel antimicrobial solutions.
