Isabel Bettencourt Silva

Isabel Bettencourt Moreira da Silva is a Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicines of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal) teaching the curricular units of Hematology, Biochemistry I and Cellular Biology at the Integrated Master’s Course of Pharmaceutical Sciences. She is also responsible for the Hematology I curricular unit at Master´s Degree in Laboratory Medicine of the same Institution. With a background in enzymatic and molecular studies of lysosomal storage diseases she also focused on the research of genetic alterations of colorectal cancer with emphasis on p53 cell signaling and its importance in apoptosis modulation. The role of microRNAs in colorectal cancer development and progression, as well as in chemoresistance was also an area of research interest. Since 2013 she develops research activities in Ethnopharmacy namely in quality, safety and efficacy of traditional herbal preparations used in Africa (Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau) and/or Portugal, to contribute to the validation of the concrete use of it by the local populations and to promote the sustainable development of them.
