Research Scientist at the National Institute of Health (INSA); Invited professor at Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon, on Virology and Emerging Infectious Diseases of Viral Etiology; Consultant for COVID-19 at the General-Directorate of Health. Director of the Health Museum. At INSA was Coordinator of the National Influenza Reference Centre (1993- 2009), Coordinator of the National Polio Reference Laboratory (1998-2009), Coordinator of the Respiratory and Enteric Virus Unit (1998-2009), Coordinator of the National Measles Reference Laboratory (2003-2009), and Deputy Director of the Virology Department (1998-2004). International level: WHO Staff and consultant (GOARN), Washington (2009) and Switzerland (2010/2011); Short-term consultant for ECDC – WHO-Euro (2013); Consultant for the Minister of Health in Brazil (Sept 2012 – May 2013); Consultant in WHO Afro Region (2005), between other international missions. Areas of work: Development and implementation of surveillance programmes and contingency plans; Strengthening of laboratory diagnostic capacity and surveillance to improve early warning and response in influenza field, to (re)emerging infectious diseases and biopreparation; Molecular epidemiological surveillance of influenza virus; Validation of targets for antiviral development and validation of antiviral compounds in the area of influenza, SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses; Molecular determinants of pathogenesis and virulence in influenza virus and antiviral resistance. Warded with 7 awards. Author of 81 publish papers and more of 200 communications and conferences. Editor and author of 3 books and 19 chapters in several books. Coordinated and/or collaborate more than 18 research projects externally financed and tutor of several PhD and master degree students.
