Graça Soveral has a PhD in Pharmacy, sub-area Biochemistry, from the University of Lisbon, with the Habilitation degree. She is Full Professor of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy University of Lisbon, and principal investigator at iMed.ULisboa where she coordinates the Membrane Transporters in Health and Disease laboratory. Her scientific interests are centered on studying membrane transport in biological systems and investigating mechanisms underlying transporter defects that may lead to disease. Her group is focused on membrane water channels (aquaporins) as targets for drug action, identifying mechanisms of aquaporin regulation, and discovering modulators for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. She has contributed to unveiling the crucial role of aquaporins in obesity, inflammation, and cancer, paving the way for the development of novel pharmacological approaches. She is Past President of the Portuguese Biochemical Society (SPB), and the Chair of the council of FEBS (Federation of European Biochemical Societies) for 2024. Soveral has published more than 100 indexed peer-reviewed publications, she (co)authored 5 book chapters, 2 books as editor, and filled 1 international patent. She has supervised nearly 30 PhD/MSc students and postdoctoral fellows. She has been an invited speaker at top-tier international conferences and served as evaluator and panel chair on national and international evaluation boards and international commissions.
