Researcher
Short bio & current area(s) of interest
The major interest in scientific research is molecular biology and subjects related with public health and infectious diseases. Acquired a multidisciplinary education that began in a Chemistry degree, complemented with a Masters in Clinical Microbiology and a PhD in Molecular Biology of host pathogen interactions. Developed competences in areas such as project and lab management, science communication and entrepreneurship. The first two major research projects were related with epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance, where molecular typing methods were applied characterize strains isolated from clinical samples collected at Portuguese hospitals, highlighting the need for active surveillance. For the following years, in Chlamydia trachomatis host pathogen-interactions, concluded an MsC, a PhD, and a post-doc. Gained skills in molecular biology techniques, bioinformatics tools to perform phylogenetic and molecular evolutionary analyses, cell culture and bacterial infection methodologies, protein-protein interaction and fluorescence microscopy techniques. This work lead to the discovery and characterization of a novel interaction between a C. trachomatis protein and a host cell centrosomal protein. In a second post-doc, molecular biology techniques were applied for the discovery of novel treatments for feline mammary tumors. Currently, as an auxiliary researcher of the Host-Pathogen Interactions Unit, the main focus is the characterization of the molecular determinants of pathogenesis of influenza virus, including applied research towards the improvement of the production of the influenza A virus vaccine.
