Short bio & current area(s) of interest
Dora Brites was graduated in Pharmacy (1976), received her PhD degree in Biochemistry (1988) and habilitation in Biological Sciences (2004) from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (FFULisboa). She is Research Coordinator of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicines (since 2006) at the FFULisboa and Head of Neuroinflammation, Signaling and Neuroregeneration at iMed.ULisboa. She is the Leader of the Bilirubin and Bile Acid laboratory Medicine since 1998. She taught across the three-cycle system, being Invited Full Professor from 2010 to 2018. She created the Histology and Embriology unit (1988), and the Neurobiology module at the Biopharmaceutical Sciences, where she has been coordinating Physiopathology of Neuroinflammation and Neuropathology and Neuropharmacology curricular units at FFULisboa. Her research interests reside on neurodevelopmental alterations and age-related neurodegenerative disorders, namely Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), with a focus on neuroinflammatory signaling pathways and dysregulated neuronal-glia crosstalk, including the shedding, cargo, and distribution of extracellular vesicles, such as exosomes. The lab uses advanced disease models and recently identified a set of inflammatory-associated miRNAs as determining glia polarization and neurodegeneration, leading to the discovery of new targets, early disease biomarkers and accelerating the development of driven medicines in AD and ALS. Dora Brites authored >110 papers (h-index=43), supervised >60 PostDoc/PhD/MSc students and won several projects (FCT/EU-funded JPND) and awards (Santa Casa). Dora Brites is Vice-President of the Scientific Council at FFULisboa and member of the Directive Board of PhD Programs, of Mind-Brain College and of Portuguese Glial Network.
