Daniela Pinto

Principal Investigator
Short bio & current area(s) of interest
Daniela Pinto holds a degree in Microbial Biology and Genetics (2006) and an MSc in Molecular Biology and Genetics (2007) from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (FCUL, Portugal). Her MSc work focused on antimicrobial resistance in enterococci and included research at LMG Bacterial Collection (Belgium). Daniela worked as a research technician at Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (IBET, Portugal; 2007–2008) on an ERA-NET project studying Enterococcus faecalis virulence. She completed her PhD in Biology (specialty of Microbiology) at FCUL (2009–2013) on resuscitation of food borne pathogens from the viable but nonculturable state, with a short international research stay at Newcastle University, funded through a Marie-Curie ITN. As a postdoc at LMU Munich (Germany; 2014-2016), supported by a Marie Curie IEF, she explored bacterial gene regulation and synthetic biology, continuing at TU Dresden (Germany; 2016-2019) under ERA-SynBio funding. In 2018, an EMBO fellowship led her to Københavns Universitet, advancing her work in bioinformatics and genomics. Returning to Portugal in 2019, she joined iMed.ULisboa working on engineered phage endolysins in the PhaBRIC group. Between 2022-2014, Daniela has contributed to One-Health projects at CE3C (FCUL). Awarded a CEEC-IND Assistant Research contract in 2024, she re-joined iMed.ULisboa to lead a project on probiotic-mediated antimicrobial drug production.
