João Perdigão obtained his PhD in Pharmacy, specialization in Microbiology, in 2013 at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon. Since 2013, he is a postdoctoral research fellow at iMed.ULisboa and, since 2019, he co-heads the Laboratory of Bacterial Pathogenomics and Drug Resistance along with Isabel Portugal. His primary research has been focused on the study of the evolution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis multidrug resistant strains and genomic epidemiology/comparative genomics of clinical isolates circulating in Portugal and Portuguese-speaking countries. Over the last decade, the results stemming from this scientific activity have resulted in a deeper understanding of the epidemiological burden and transmission dynamics of M. tuberculosis multidrug resistant strains in Portugal and Portuguese speaking countries. The scientific output has not only contributed relevant data capable of informing local programmatic TB management but, has also contributed to the development of rapid molecular diagnostic tests via the elucidation of the mechanisms and mutations underlying drug resistance. J. Perdigão has also directed the development of CPLP-TB, a tuberculosis surveillance tool for the Lusophone space (available at http://cplp-tb.ff.ulisboa.pt). Additionally, João Perdigão research area also includes the study of bacterial persistence/latency associated mechanisms leading to drug tolerance in vivo, including global transcriptomic profiling of different M. tuberculosis strains under latency models. Another area of interest lies upon the study of antimicrobial resistance and diversity of Gram-negative bacterial species (e.g. Klebsiella pneumonia) using state of the art High Throughput Sequencing technologies (e.g. Illumina and PacBio).
