iMed.ULisboa Neuroscience SEMINAR: Immunological role of glia in synucleinopathies

Laurent Roybon, Associate Professor in Neurobiology, Stem Cell Lab for CNS Disease Modelling, Department of Experimental Medical Science, Lund University, will present the seminar Dietary compounds and neuroprotection” next Monday April 1st at 12h.

Synucleinopathies – Parkinson’s disease, multiple system atrophy and dementia with Lewy bodies, are a group of brain diseases whose cellular hallmark is aggregation of alpha-synuclein proteins. Limited evidence has shed light on how alpha-synuclein proteins affect glial phenotype and pathogenesis in synucleinopathies. Here, we will present evidence for early cellular pathways and networks alterations in astrocytes and oligodendrocytes in Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy, and demonstrate the involvement of an immune component triggered by alpha-synuclein protein aggregates. This new knowledge could be used to devise novel therapeutic approaches to treat synucleinopathies.
