On July 7th, Honoris Causa will be awarded to professors Gordon Lewis Amidon and Gregory Gregoriadis.
The ceremony will be held at the Great Hall of the Universidade de Lisboa at 5:00 p.m.
Professor Gordon L. Amidon graduated from the State University of New York, Buffalo (1967) and received a Master’s degree in Mathematics (1970) and a PhD (1971) from the University of Michigan. From 1971 to 1981, Gordon Amidon was a professor at the University of Wisconsin. He is internationally known for his research in the area of drug absorption, transport phenomena, solubility and dissolution and prodrugs. He has published extensively in scientific journals, with over 335 published articles and 370 abstracts, 18 US patents, over 30 book chapters and monographs, and co-editor on 8 books. Prof. Amidon has mentored over 80 doctoral and post-doctoral students with over 20 pursuing academic careers.
Gregory Gregoriadis is Professor Emeritus at the School of Pharmacy, University of London, UK. Born in Athens, he holds a degree in Chemistry from the University of Athens (1957), a Master’s in Biochemistry (1966) and a Doctor (PhD) in Biochemistry (1968) from McGill University, Montreal, Canada and Doctor of Science (DSc) from the University of London, UK (2001). He is an outstanding scientist, recognized worldwide, to whom we owe the innovative strategic vision, the pioneering studies and the identification of fundamental steps for the use of the first lipid nanoparticles (liposomes) as controlled release systems of drugs and immunological adjuvants. Starting a new Research Area in Pharmaceutical Technology, his work contributed decisively to the creation of the first nanomedicine based on liposome technology and later applied in micro and nanoparticle systems and, recently, in the formulation of vaccines against COVID-19.
