Aida Duarte has been involved in projects related with a)the molecular mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics among gram negative bacteria; b) characterization of nosocomial strains by molecular typing; c) the antimicrobial activity of bioactive compounds. In view of this, the actual research interests and ongoing projects are the molecular characterization of the antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in Gram-negative bacteria of diverse origins and study the interference of antibiotics, disinfectants and antiseptics against bacteria in planktonic and in biofilm form. Also, the scientific knowledge of the virulent mechanisms in bacteria, with focus in multidrug resistant strains in community as in hospital setting is important in view to further development of alternatives therapeutic options.
