PhD Student was distinguished with Prize SPQ

Ricardo Ferreira, PhD from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universidade de Lisboa (FFULisboa), was distinguished with the Prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis in Medicinal Chemistry. This Prize, awarded by the Portuguese Chemistry Society (SPQ), distinguishes the PhD Thesis “Reversing Multidrug Resistance (MDR) in Cancer Cells by Targeting P-glycoprotein (P-gp) – Insights into the Mechanism of MDR Reversal from in silico P-gp Modeling” conducted by Ricardo Ferreira under the supervision of Maria José U. Ferreira, Professor of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Therapeutics at FFULisboa and Leader of the Natural Products Chemistry group at the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa) and with co-supervision of Daniel dos Santos, iMed.ULisboa collaborator investigator.

The distinction granted by the Medicinal Chemistry Division of SPQ aims at recognizing the scientific merit of doctoral theses held mostly in national institutions. The award is intended for recent doctoral students who have obtained the degree in national institutions, and is based on the work developed during the PhD in the area of Medicinal Chemistry.

Ricardo Ferreira’s PhD thesis work focused on the identification/optimization of natural compounds as reversers of multidrug-resistance and on the structural and functional characterization of P-glycoprotein, a drug efflux pump.

The award ceremony was held on January 18, 2018, in Coimbra, during the National Congress of Organic Chemistry and Therapeutic Chemistry.
