The primary research relies on the study of the evolution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis multidrug resistant strains and genomic epidemiology/comparative genomics of clinical isolates circulating in Portugal and Portuguese-speaking countries such as Brazil, Angola, Guinea-Bissau or Mozambique. Additionally, the research area also includes the study of bacterial persistence/latency associated mechanisms leading to drug tolerance in vivo, including global transcriptomic profiling of different M. tuberculosis strains under latency models. Another area of interest lies upon the study of antimicrobial resistance and diversity of Gram-negative bacterial species (e.g. Klebsiella pneumoniae and Neisseria gonorrhoeae) using state of the art High Throughput Sequencing technologies (e.g. Illumina and PacBio).
