Our aim is to understand the mechanism of water transport and it´s regulation in plants, in particular, Vitis vinifera (cv.Touriga Nacional). Specifically, to functionally characterize the Vitis aquaporins (PIPs, TIPs, NIPs) expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae through stopped-flow spectroscopy. We are also interested to explore the specificity of aquaporins for non-aqua substrates and regulatory effects of cations, pH and stress agents in water and glycerol transport and the putative interactions between aquaporins by their co-expression.
