Research Interests

Carlos A. M. Afonso leads an organic chemistry team exploring the following main topics: New catalyzed synthetic methodologies (metal organocatalyzed synthesis of carbocycles, C-H insertion of carbenoid intermediates, photochemical rearrangements), green chemistry (reactions in water, ionic liquids, PEG, solvent free, catalyst reuse, membrane technology), synthetic valorization of national natural resources, development of new materials (ionic liquids, two-photon probes), biotransformations.
